This identical comparison was made to the Olympic men golfers about a week ago (week ag0).
Here’s how the field breaks down, with a good chunk of golfers ignored due to lack of data and info:
Thoughts:
Only 3 Women in the Million Dollar Club
If we are to consider the Olympic golfers some of the best in the world, then it’s quite surprising to see that only 3 of them, on average, make more than $1 million per season on tour.
Lydia Ko has obviously taken a bit of advantage from the higher purse amounts, but it’s quite clear that she just kicks major butt at golf. She’s almost halfway to Suzann Pettersen’s total amount, and still has 5 more years until she’s been on tour for only half the time that Pettersen is.
Being an OK Women’s Professional Golfer can be Financially Tough
There are 4 women on this list who have played for over 10 years but earn less, on average, than $55,000 per year in tour winnings. Even more frightening, two golfers have played for at least 15 years professionally but have averaged less than $25,000 per year in winnings.
This takes that meaning surrounding “love of the game” to a completely different level. I sure hope there is some supplemental income flowing from local sponsors. Otherwise, you have to assume these women are some of the best in the world at golf and must find work during the offseason to provided for themselves and families.
The Superb Careers
Inbee Park, Suzann Pettersen and Amy (Hee Young) Yang deserve some recognition for their consistency and success for 10+ years on tour. All three have averaged more than about $650,000 per year in earnings and have paved the way for women’s golf to expand, for more interest to occur, for more support to start, and for more corporate sponsors to sign on and rise the level of total purses each weekend.
